As we continue to deal with the devastation of Sandy, going the extra mile reminds us to wipe away our tears when tragedy strikes, rise to our feet, and continue to give life our very best effort.
The ‘go the extra mile’ message gives people an alternative to just throwing their arms in the air and saying ‘I give up.’ We each have a choice when life gets tough to dig deep…do more…try harder…and affect practically every area of our life and communities in a positive way.
We all talk about wanting change…happiness…more opportunity. However, relying on others to make that happen is only wishing for life to get better. Taking personal responsibility…and going the extra mile individually…is where true success is found. Extra Mile Day is a small reminder of the power we each have to create change at any time…on any day.
At times, life is challenging. The ‘go the extra mile’ message, though, gives people an alternative to just throwing their arms in the air and saying ‘I give up.’ We each have a choice when life gets tough to dig deep…do more…try harder…and affect practically every area of our life and communities in a positive way.
The City of Greensboro and our nation were founded by men and women who went above and beyond. We appreciate the efforts of Shawn Anderson and Extra Mile America as they inspire hope and bring renewed life to the idea that hard work, perseverance and passion still pave the way for success in all of our lives.
There is an alternative to throwing our hands in the air and giving up when things don’t go our way. If we really want more out of life, it starts with the person in the mirror…and a willingness to do more than we are doing to get more of what we want.
Shawn is dynamic…and so is his message. He is all heart and soul, and he pushes the buttons that make us want to live differently.
As a single mom, I had lost faith that I was ever going to live the life I had dreamed. But since becoming an extra mile person, I have exceeded all my work goals, and I was able to buy my dream house.
Tragedy may have happened, mistakes might have been made, but the events of today don’t have to define our potential for tomorrow.
Faith in a higher power…and yourself…works miracles in overcoming bad events.
No one is immune from experiencing tragedy. It is inevitable that life will throw a hurdle into each of our lives.

“The Games are also a perfect time to learn a few life-changing lessons that can catapult us to more success in our own lives.”
“Watching others succeed in the Olympics is fun…no doubt. But when we get only one life, why not try achieving our own Olympic-like success?”
“Sometimes, life punches us so hard that merely surviving day-to-day is all we can do. The job we hate, the relationship that sours, the personal tragedy that devastates…life has a way of happening. But it’s what we do after life ‘happens’ that makes a difference in our futures.”
My passion in life is to remind others we have the power to live a life we love.
