Subaru chooses Falken Tyre to support its Nürburgring 24-Hour charge
Subaru has confirmed that it will make the move to Falken tyres in its bid to secure a fourth class win in the 44th ADAC Zurich 24-hour race, held at the Nürburgring, Germany, on 28-29 May 2016.
The Japanese tyre supplier’s extensive knowledge of the Nordschleife, and in particular the Nürburgring 24-hour race, led to a podium finish for the Falken Motorsports team at the gruelling endurance race in 2015 with its now-retired Porsche 997 GT3 R. Following this success, Subaru has selected Falken to equip its Subaru WRX STI, which has been prepared by Subaru Tecnica International (STI) specifically for the legendary event.
Competing in the SP3T class for cars with turbocharged 2.0-litre engines, Subaru and STI aim to enhance the competiveness of the race car for 2016 through aerodynamics, a weight reduction programme and the introduction of high performance parts, including Falken tyres.
“For 2016 we are making further improvements to our class-winning Subaru WRX STI, and high performance tyres will play a major part in this upgrade,” says STI Team General Manager Hideharu Tatsumi. “Falken Tyre has demonstrated outstanding performance in the changeable and unpredictable conditions at the Nürburgring and we’re looking forward to gaining from this experience as we target further victories.”
“We’re excited to be working with Subaru and STI to support the team’s next campaign at the Nürburgring 24-hour race,” says Stephan Cimbal, Head of Marketing for Falken Tyre Europe GmbH. “The Nürburgring is the ultimate test in performance and endurance, and our success story with Porsche reinforces Falken’s strength and expertise in high technology tyre development.”
Over 350 slick and rain tyres will be provided by Falken to the Subaru team, which has also competed in the third race of the Nürburgring-based VLN Endurance Racing Championship this year. The team’s driver line-up from 2015 will return to pilot the Subaru WRX STI: Hideki Yamauchi from Japan; Marcel Lasée from Germany; Carlo van Dam from the Netherlands, and Tim Schrick from Germany.
This latest partnership with Subaru supports Falken’s existing collaboration with the brand in the United States, where it is an OE supplier for Subaru’s Outback and Legacy models.
