Majority of Chinese passengers travelling through Helsinki Airport are enjoyment seekers

According to Helsinki Airport passenger segmentation study three out of four visitors from China travelling through Helsinki Airport fit the traveller description enjoyment seekers. Four distinct traveller types were identified based on air travellers’ travel habits and attitudes, as well as their different needs and expectations. The research was conducted by Finavia and Red Note in 2012.

Finavia, which maintains a network of 25 airports in Finland, commissioned a study that found out that up to 73% of Chinese travellers visiting Helsinki Airport are enjoyment seekers. The other traveller types identified are habitual travellers, fast and efficient flyers and safety seekers.

How are enjoyment seekers distinct from the other traveller types? Spending time at the airport is an experience on its own right for enjoyment seekers. They enjoy finding out what the shops have to offer and they welcome the opportunity to try out new dining options. Given the opportunity to pamper themselves, they are likely to try it out. On the other hand, enjoyment seekers also know that not all fun at the airport comes with a price tag attached. They are also likely to take a moment to play and explore if there’s an interesting area to discover.

The shortest route from China to Europe goes via Helsinki

Helsinki Airport is easily reached by Finnair flights from Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Hong Kong. A record breaking 500 000 passengers will travel between Helsinki and China this year. Helsinki Airport offers 130 non-stop destinations around the world, and 350 departures a day.

“Signage in Chinese is displayed across the airport, and our friendly team of customer service personnel includes Chinese speaking individuals. We take into account requirements stemming from cultural differences as well as the varied expectations for business and leisure travel,” says Kari Savolainen, CEO of Finavia.

Helsinki Airport is compactly under one roof with short distances and transfer times as short as 35 minutes. All departures and arrivals take place from the same building. The comprehensive shopping area offers a wide selection of Finnish and international brands. For example the world's first Angry Birds airport shop delights passengers with familiar sights and sounds from the popular video game.

At Helsinki Airport, the latest technology, innovative design and personalized service come together to form a unique experience. The airport offers a wireless network free of charge, which has been praised by passengers for its speed and ease of use. Additionally wireless charging for mobile phones and tablets is available across the airport.

Art and design are showcased throughout the airport. There are four art galleries displaying Finnish art, design and creative thinking. The exhibition spaces enhance the travelling experience and contribute to a pleasant atmosphere by offering sensations and a chance to relax.

“Design is also evident in the airport’s award-winning architecture, the terminals’ high interior design and the stores’ product selections, as well as the airport’s modern service solutions,” says Savolainen.
