Finnair strongly supports ICAO’s historic decision to implement a global scheme on carbon emissions for the aviation sector

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has agreed to a historic agreement which will implement a market-based measure to stabilize airline emissions with carbon neutral growth. The agreement was signed at the 39th ICAO Assembly which concluded yesterday in Montreal, Canada. Sixty-five ICAO member states, which cover approximately 85% of the world’s aviation activity, have already volunteered to join the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) from the beginning of the initiative.

“Finnair has been advocating the creation of a global emission reduction scheme for many years,” says Kati Ihamäki, Director of Corporate Responsibility at Finnair. “We have worked closely together with other industry members towards the implementation of this significant initiative. We are very pleased that this historic milestone has finally been reached.”

The CORSIA agreement is one element in the aviation sector’s actions on climate change. Other environmental improvement measures include the use of modern technology, the adoption of sustainable alternative fuels, efficient operational practices and improvements in infrastructure.

“Climate change mitigation has been an ongoing process for several years at Finnair,” adds Ihamäki. “We are currently completing the modernization of our long-haul fleet with the new Airbus A350, which is the one of the most energy efficient aircraft on the market. In addition, we are also heavily involved in the Helsinki Green Hub project which aims at facilitating the future use of bio fuels at our Helsinki Airport Hub.”
