Passenger Load Factor increased year-on-year by 2.6%

In August, Finnair carried 1,361,100 passengers, 12.9% more than in the corresponding period of 2018. The overall capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) increased in August by 9.3%. Finnair's traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) increased by 12.8%, and the Passenger Load Factor (PLF) increased year-on-year by 2.6% points to 86.8%.

Finnair’s long-haul capacity increased year-on-year with three new A350 aircraft that entered the service after the comparison period. The ASK growth in Asian traffic was 10.8%, mainly due to additional frequencies to Hong Kong and Osaka. The North American capacity increased by 31.8% following the opening of the new Los Angeles route in March and added frequencies to San Francisco.

In European traffic the ASKs were up by 4.3%. The growth derived from additional seating capacity in some of the existing narrow-body aircraft and the changes in route network. The added capacity was directed especially to new seasonal destinations Hannover and Trondheim and added frequencies to London, Moscow and St Petersburg. Capacity in domestic traffic decreased by 4.7%. The runway renovation and consequent closure of Kuusamo airport for the main part of the months was a key contributor to this decline.

RPKs increased in Asian traffic by 9.2%, in North American traffic by 34.3%, in European traffic by 13.5% and in domestic traffic by 5.2%. The PLF was 90.5% in Asian traffic, 89.5% in North American traffic, 82.9% in European traffic and 66.5% in domestic traffic.

Passenger numbers increased in Asian traffic by 8.9%, in North American traffic by 27.2%, in European traffic by 14.9% and in domestic traffic by 4.9%.

Available scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased by 13.1% year-on-year. Revenue scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased by 10.0%. Global uncertainty in world trade has reflected on the freight market and has generally lowered expectations, especially for cargo departing from Asia.

Finnair cancelled four long haul flight in the last week of the August and several domestic and European flight during the month due to technical reasons and weather conditions. In August 76.9% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (82.5%).

Traffic statistics for September 2019 will be published on Tuesday 8 October 2019.
