Finnair Plc          Investor News        5 December 2019 at 9:00 am

Despite the support strike in Finland, passenger load factor growth remained strong

In November, Finnair carried 1,084,000 passengers, 10.6% more than in the corresponding period of 2018. The overall capacity measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK) increased in November by 9.4%. Finnair's traffic measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPKs) increased by 13.1%, and the Passenger Load Factor (PLF) increased year-on-year by 2.5% points to 77.1%.

Finnair’s long-haul capacity increased year-on-year with three new A350 aircraft that entered the service after the comparison period. The ASK growth in Asian traffic was 8.3%, mainly due to the doubling of Hong Kong frequencies, additional frequencies to Bangkok as well as opening of Daxing (Beijing) route even though the support strike affected the Asian flights. The North American capacity increased by 45.6% following the opening of the new Los Angeles route in March and additional frequencies to Chicago.

In European traffic, the ASKs were up by 5.8%. The growth derived from additional seating capacity in some of the existing narrow-body aircraft and the changes in route network. The added capacity was directed especially to London and to new destinations Hannover and Trondheim. Capacity in domestic traffic decreased by 2.1% mainly due to changes in traffic plan

RPKs increased in Asian traffic by 9.6%, in North American traffic by 45.6%, in European traffic by 12.6% and in domestic traffic by 6.8%. The PLF was 78.4% in Asian traffic, 75.3% in North American traffic, 77.1% in European traffic and 66.7% in domestic traffic.

Passenger numbers increased in Asian traffic by 9.8%, in North American traffic by 41.5%, in European traffic by 12.5% and in domestic traffic by 2.1%.

Available scheduled cargo tonne kilometres increased by 3.8% year-on-year whereas revenue scheduled cargo tonne kilometres decreased by 3.9%. November performance was strongly impacted by the postal and support strikes in Finland. Overall global uncertainty in world trade continues to press global air freight market and was especially visible in Finnair’s cargo markets in Asia.

In November, 86.1% of all Finnair flights arrived on schedule (85.6%).

Traffic statistics for December 2019 will be published on Tuesday 7 January 2020
