PRESS RELEASE 15 September 2011

Fortum's work on promoting sustainability and climate change mitigation has received two important international recognitions: Fortum was ranked the best utility in Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) scoring 97/100 points and was the only Nordic company included in the index. Fortum was also listed in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index DJSI World for the ninth consecutive year.

"We are very pleased that Fortum's ambitious and extensive carbon-dioxide goals together with our actions in climate change issues as well as our comprehensive and transparent disclosure have been recognised in the CDLI evaluation", says Anne Brunila, Fortum's Executive Vice President of Corporate Relations and Sustainability.

A vision of the future energy system leads Fortum's operations

Fortum's long-term objective is to transfer to a so called solar economy where energy is produced primarily with renewable energy sources and without CO2 emissions. Also Fortum’s updated strategy has a strong link to the objectives of sustainable development. The company's performance in economic, social and environmental responsibility and in particular Fortum's actions in mitigating climate change are reflected in company's high rankings in international sustainability indexes.

"In comparison to last year's Dow Jones assessment, we improved our results in all areas of sustainability. In the countries where we operate, Fortum is an important investor and employer, and we have a significant role in promoting local well-being. I am particularly satisfied with our distinctively improved performance in economic responsibility. Fortum also received the highest scores in its industry for the economic performance measurement and scorecard system," says Ulla Rehell, Vice President, Sustainability.

Fortum is also at the top of its industry in occupational safety and customer relationship management as well as in resource efficiency. In addition, the company's comprehensive third-party assured responsibility reporting was mentioned in the assessment.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index is created by evaluating the sustainability activities of 2,500 of the world's largest companies. In 2011, altogether 342 companies were selected for the index. The Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index compares 52 Global 500 Index companies and their measures on climate issues.
