Annual outage 2019 at Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant completed

Both units at Fortum’s Loviisa nuclear power plant are back in production upon completion of their annual outages. The annual outage of Unit 2 lasted nearly 26 days, until 13 September 2019, and the maintenance outage of Unit 1 lasted 20 days, until 27 September. Both units underwent a refuelling outage, during which about one quarter of the fuel was replaced.

The planned duration of Unit 2’s refuelling outage was exceeded by about eight days because of the repairs made during the annual outage to the cooling piping of two of the four emergency generators where leaks had been discovered in the periodic test carried out in July. Additional inspections and tests were conducted also on the cooling piping of the two other generators; they didn’t require additional measures.

In addition to the normal periodic maintenance tasks and refuelling, tasks related to maintenance and continuous improvement, such as modification of the primary water purification system’s filtering, was carried out on both units. The modification enables more effective filtering of impurities in the primary circuit; this is expected to lead to a significant reduction in radiation doses during future annual outages. During the annual outage a new fibre optic connection to the containment building was deployed to enhance process system monitoring and accelerate data transmission in the future.

In addition to the 500 Fortum employees who participated in the Loviisa annual outage that began in August, there were also about 800 external workers. Some 90 per cent of the workers are Finns.
