Fortum examines industrial waste samples from Krasnyi Bor in Riihimäki

Specialists from Fortum’s recycling and waste solutions business, together with representatives from the Russian Natural Resources Supervision Service, have extracted samples from water basins at Krasnyi Bor’s hazardous waste landfill in St. Petersburg. The goal of the extraction is to determine what substances are in the pools.

The samples will be analysed at Fortum’s laboratory in Riihimäki. After analysis, it will be possible to plan how the waste from Krasnyi Bor can be treated efficiently and in a safe manner. An agreement on the further treatment of the waste has not been made.

The sampling on the 21st of February was attended by representatives of Ministry of   Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation and Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Finland. The study is expected to be completed in 2018. The financing of the sampling and analysis is provided by the Nordic Environmental Finance Corporation NEFCO, based on an agreement between the governments of the two countries.
