Vinnova, Sweden’s Innovation Agency, recently announced that a 18.7 MSEK research grant for the project “Hardware for next generation millimeter wave automotive radar sensor” was approved. The total project budget amounts to 37.2 MSEK. The partners within the research project are Gapwaves, Veoneer, CEVT and Chalmers University of Technology. The project will focus on further research on the gap waveguide technology and how the hardware, antennas and antenna systems, can be developed for next generation’s automotive radar.

The Vinnova grant of 18.7 MSEK will be distributed between Chalmers University of Technology (16.7 MSEK), Gapwaves (1.4 MSEK) and Venoeer (0.6 MSEK) and has been granted within the research program “Traffic security and autonomous vehicles – FFI – 2018-06-12”. The research will be conducted on antenna and antenna systems and about technologies for integration of antennas and circuits for future radar frequencies above 100 GHz. The project goal is to develop more sophisticated antennas for increased resolution, wider viewing angle and better ability to distinguish and separate between objects.

Gapwaves is the project coordinator while the largest part of work will be conducted by Chalmers University of Technology. The project will run for four years starting 2019 and will involve 3.5 PhD students and post doc graduates. In addition, employees from Gapwaves, Veoneer and CEVT, with a history of partnership from the cooperation within MobilityXlab, will be engaged in the project. The foundation of the research work will be the gap waveguide technology which is owned by Gapwaves.

“We are very pleased Vinnova has granted the application. The area for millimeter wave radars is very interesting and a key for the development of vehicle safety systems and autonomous vehicles”, says representatives from Chalmers, Gapwaves, Veoneer and CEVT in a joint statement.
