Garforth Golf Club re-kindles its association with the Ryder Cup

Golf’s most famous trophy, the Ryder Cup, will make a visit to a Leeds golf club on Thursday 27th June 2013.  As part of its Centenary celebrations, Garforth Golf Club will host the visit, giving members the chance to fulfil many golfer’s dream – being photographed holding the cup aloft!

Credit for the Ryder Cup visit goes to the club’s Professional, Ken Findlater.  Once Europe had secured the trophy in 2012, he wrote to  Sandy Jones, Chief Executive of the PGA and requested the cup in Garforth Golf Club's Centenary Year.

Garforth’s connection with the Ryder Cup dates back to July 1914 when two of the golf greats of that time, Abe Mitchell and Tom Williamson, were invited to play in an exhibition match to celebrate the official opening of the course.  Abe Mitchell – who was golf coach to wealthy seed merchant, Samuel Ryder - played in the Ryder cup in 1929, 1931 and 1933 and it is his figure that sits proudly on top of the cup that stands as a lasting memorial to Abe Mitchell.

Club Captain for 2013, Andy King, said, "It’s a real coup for us that we will have the Ryder Cup at Garforth in what is such a special year for the club."

There is more to come in Centenary Year at Garforth, with highlights including a Centenary Dinner at the end of June, an Edwardian Golf day in July, a Family Fun Day in August.  Garforth Golf Club will also host the prestigious MacKenzie Medallion Golf Tournament in September.
