Gasum supplies renewable biogas to Oslo
The Nordic energy company Gasum supplies Hafslund Oslo Celsio (former Fortum Oslo Varme) with liquified biogas (LBG) to produce district heating to the city of Oslo. Biogas has proved a versatile and reliable low-emission energy source for district heating, and it can be safely and cost-effectively applied also for other industrial purposes.
In April 2022, Gasum provided renewable biogas to Hafslund Oslo Celsio (former Fortum Oslo Varme), whose aim is to produce and deliver district heating in Oslo with lowest possible carbon footprint. Hafslund Oslo Celsio delivers 20% of the heating demand in Oslo.
In 2021, only 1.5% of the energy mix in the production of district heating was fossil fuel (LNG). The LBG from Gasum will partly replace the remaining LNG and contribute to Hafslund Oslo Celsio’s goal to be fossil free in a normal production situation.
The renewable energy source is produced from cellulose and fish farming biowaste in Biokraft plant in Skogn, north of Trondheim.
“Over the last years we have invested heavily in new production plants based on renewable heating technologies and technologies that allow us to use excess energy in the city. In our view, biogas is one of the key solutions to replace the flexible and immediate energy source LNG. We are continuously introducing new measures to reduce emissions and biogas is one of these”, says Kristin Paus, Hafslund Oslo Celsio’s communication manager.
Biogas is 100% renewable energy source for demanding industrial purposes
Gasum helps its customers to find renewable low-emission energy alternatives to accelerate green transition and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In many cases biogas is the fastest, most reliable and most cost-effective renewable energy alternative to fossil fuels such as coal or oil. Biogas is completely renewable, and it is in line with the UN Climate Panel’s suggestions to increase the share of non-fossil fuels.
The use of biogas in the district heating of Oslo demonstrates it can be safely and effectively used for different types of industrial purposes. Technology, know-how and data that support conversions are already there.

Gasum aims at increasing the carbon emission reduction from 345,000 tons in 2021 up to 1 million ton in 2025 by incrasing biogas availability to 4 TWh. When replacing natural gas with biogas, customer does not have to invest in their facilities as the products have similar physical properties and energy content.
