It is apparent in the exhibition that we have dared. We are passionate about our materials and we are curious, says Lovisa Smedjebäck Youngström, one of the 54 students who exhibits during Degree Show 2017.
Opening on Friday, May 26 at 17:00 – welcome!

The last two years, the degree show has been housed in elegant apartments on Vasagatan in Gothenburg city centre. This year, the exhibition is located at Fixfabriken, a former plastics factory in an industrial area in Majorna. Charlotta Eidenskog, project manager for the third year on the rake, appreciates the change.
“Yes, this is something completely different. Fixfabriken is a large and open local and we hope to be able to complement visitors who do not usually move in the centre,” she says.

The 54 students represent eight of HDK's twelve programmes, from both Gothenburg and Steneby.
“It's an exciting project. We want to emphasize that students are individuals who do individual jobs and projects. At the same time, we want to have an exhibition that works as a whole. It's a challenge but it's also really fun.”

Lovisa Smedjebäck Youngström, Jewellery Art & Design BA level, agrees that the individual is important to in the degree show, where many programmes are collated side by side.
"We all have different starting points and conclusions. For my part, I think that the work in process many times is more interesting than finished items. There is openness in them, a road break that inspires.”

Her degree project “Förstörelse, otillräcklighet och handtag” (Destruction, Inadequacy and Handle) is about climate anxiety, which she associates with the materials she uses in her daily life.
“A key issue during the process has been: How can I handle my climate anxiety? I have handled it by making handles. The work has resulted in a number of handles, which carry different stories of how I or we use materials at the expense of the earth.”

Ellen Dynebrink from the master's programme in crafts experiences that arts and crafts is given a bigger space in this exhibition format.
“It is important for the perception of what the arts are and can be,” she says.

She exhibits the work “GLITCH, BOW, BLISS” where she explores the concept of enjoyment as a strategy and method.
“I have challenged myself totally and made a project I am very pleased with,” Ellen Dynebrink says.

All degree projects are described at www.hdkexamen.gu.se. The students are degree students from the Bachelor’s programmes in Ceramic Art, Metal Art, Wood Oriented Furniture Design, Jewellery Art, Textile Art and Textile-Body-Space as well as from the Master’s Programme in Crafts and Applied Art & Design. Other degree projects will be presented in November, within the framework of HDK's new venture OPEN WEEK – Gothenburg Design Festival.
