The University Technical College Academy Trust has appointed a permanent Trust Chairman, Phil Brown from Anglian Water. His experience in developing people and understanding the skills shortages in the region will be a key asset to underpinning the work of the UTC in Peterborough.

Phil is Head of People Development at Anglian Water, and will take up the post of Trust Chairman at the new University Technical College from 1st January 2015 for a two year term of office. He has been a major contributor on the Project Board in setting up and developing the UTC, which will provide students with the skills to meet local employers workforce needs.

Acting UTC Trust Chair, Angela Joyce said: “Anglian Water are the lead employer sponsor for the UTC and are providing significant support for the new technical college, so it is fitting that Phil has agreed to become permanent Chair of the Trust. He has been part of the project team from when we first set the vision for the creation of the Greater Peterborough UTC through to us gaining Ministerial approval for this new school. Phil brings considerable energy and experience to the Board and I will be pleased to continue to work with him as part of the Trust Board”.

Phil said “I am delighted to be appointed Chair of Governors and to continue the very hands-on role I have had in the development of the GPUTC to date. As well as offering the full support of Anglian Water as the lead employer sponsor, I look forward to helping the Greater Peterborough UTC become a centre for excellence for education and employment, particularly those who will become the engineers, scientists and technicians of the future”.

The Academy Trust will act as the governing body of the UTC and brings together regional employers as well as education specialists. The Board has representatives from Larkfleet, Anglia Ruskin University, Peterborough Regional College, Caterpillar Perkins, and further Board members will be recruited over the next few months.

The new Principal designate, Dr Alan McMurdo said: “It is a privilege to be returning to Peterborough to help set up this fantastic educational facility working with dedicated employers in developing skills in young people that meet employer’s needs. I am really pleased to have Phil Brown from Anglian Water as our first chair of Governors, and his insight from an employer’s perspective in developing people. Over £10m is being invested into the region’s education system with a state of the art building and specialist equipment.

“We aim to provide world class technical education for any youngster with the aptitude for practical and applied learning. This has been missing from our educational landscape for some time but I am delighted to say that we are putting that right”.
