Record Number at Haglöfs Åre Extreme Challenge
Haglöfs Åre Extreme Challenge, the classic multi-sport competition, will take place for the 17th year in a row on June 29. The number of participants registered for this year’s event has risen sharply.
Haglöfs Åre Extreme Challenge (HÅEC) is the first of its kind in the Nordic countries and one of the world’s largest multi-sport competitions in terms of participant numbers. The competition is held annually in the dramatic natural setting of Åre, Sweden, consisting of three elements: kayaking, a mountain running and cycling. The three different classes – Solo, Duo and Team – mean that participants can compete at both elite and amateur levels.
Two weeks before the start, 585 participants had already registered for this year’s HÅEC, which is an increase of 45% compared to the previous year.
“The record number of participants we’ll see at HÅEC this year is good evidence that current trends in training and health are spilling over into more complex activities such as multi-sport. What was considered extreme and unattainable just a few years ago is now both accessible and possible for most people,” says Carl Hård af Segerstad, Swedish marketing manager at Haglöfs.
Haglöfs Åre Extreme Challenge can today accommodate 600 participants.
