VOJD ABS – the lightest ABS avalanche safety backpack on the market

For freeskiers, knowledge, experience and training are three things that they always bring to the mountain, but sometimes it is not always enough to be well prepared. When an accident occurs, the choice of safety equipment can dramatically increase the chances of a happy ending.

For the 2013 winter season, Haglöfs is introducing an avalanche safety backpack equipped with an ABS-system under the name VOJD ABS. Haglöfs is the first Swedish brand to offer such a product. The backpack was developed in collaboration with ABS Peter Aschauer GmbH and offers the best of two worlds – Haglöfs’ long history of backpack production and design in combination with ABS’s leading airbag technology for avalanche safety.

Haglöfs’ avalanche safety backpack VOJD ABS was developed for people who live for skiing – and want to continue to do so. The backpack comes in two sizes. VOJD ABS 18 for freeskiing close to the lifts, with room for safety equipment and the most important necessities, and VOJD ABS 30 for people who explore a bit further away from the lift systems and need room for extra equipment.

The single, most important factor for not being buried by the snow in an avalanche is to not end up too far down in the snow. VOJD ABS has two built-in balloons that the skier, with a simple movement of the hand, can quickly fill with a mix of compressed nitrogen and air. The blown-up balloons both increase the volume of the backpack and lower its density, which to a significantly higher extent helps the skier stay on or close to the surface.

VOJD ABS is made from two durable polyamide fabrics that are approved by bluesign® and it has been put together in such a way that skis and an ice pick can easily be attached to the backpack without obstructing the ABS function. VOJD ABS has the same characteristic features that are expected on a Haglöfs backpack with excellent carrying comfort, functional design and a long life. A volume/weight ratio of 0.088 kg per liter (VOJD ABS 30) also makes it the market’s lightest avalanche safety backpack with an integrated ABS-system.

Advanced technology for increased safety
ABS offers a well-tested airbag technology for avalanche safety that has been on the market for almost 30 years. The system consists of a cartridge of nitrogen that can be easily fitted into the backpack, two balloons that are integrated onto each side of the backpack and a handle that is put on one of the bag’s shoulder straps. When the skier pulls on the handle, the balloons are filled with a mix of nitrogen and the surrounding air, since the air is sucked in by the low pressure that is created. The two balloons are filled independently of one another for increased safety and have a total volume of 170 liters. Current statistics show that of the 262 people who were caught in an avalanche and triggered an ABS system, 97% survived.
