If your unwanted cycle is just taking up space why not trade it in?  Customers recycling old bikes will receive 10% off at Halfords superstores nationwide, from Wednesday 19th to Monday 24th March 2014.

Millions of unused bikes go to waste in sheds and garages in the UK and Halfords is working to put them to good use and reward cyclists with discounts. Working with the charity Re~Cycle, Britain’s biggest bike retailer is collecting 2nd hand bikes and giving them a new owner in Africa. In the first year of the partnership has recycled over 5,000 bikes through trade in events.

In Africa a bike can be life-changing, helping children get to school, farmers transport goods to market and health workers reach communities in need. Re~Cycle not only sends bikes to Africa, it also works with local communities teaching them how to maintain bikes, providing employment and improving lives in a sustainable way.

Halfords 10,000 colleagues also help Re~Cycle by fund-raising. Their efforts have generated over £50,000 towards the cost of sending bikes to Africa, so far.

Halfords’ CEO Matt Davies said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for customers to trade-in their old bikes, get 10% off a new one and help a great cause. Bikes can transform the lives of people in Africa so this initiative is an exciting example of where recycling can make a real difference.”

Merlin Matthews, the founder of Re~Cycle, added: “We’re really excited about the trade-in event, which is part of our long-term partnership with Halfords. Our partnership helps gives access to all those unwanted bikes and raise awareness of how people here can very easily assist those in need in Africa.”

Bikes in most demand by Re~Cycle are sturdy mountain bikes for teenagers and adults. However all bikes that are in a reasonable condition, including kids’ bikes, will be accepted by Halfords provided they are complete with no cracks in the frame and less than 25% rust.

Notes to Editors

Do I have to purchase a bike to make a donation?

Not at all – you are welcome to donate any unwanted bikes between the 19thand 24thMarch 2014.

What’s meant by ‘reasonable condition’?

Any bikes traded-in must be complete with no cracks to the frame. Will all bikes go to Africa?

Halfords will send as many bikes as possible to Re~Cycle. Where this is not practical, Halfords will recycle the bikes responsibly.

Is the offer available online?

The offer is available online when customers use ‘reserve and collect’ and pay for the bike in-store before Monday 24th March 2014,

Bikes can only be donated at all stores during the offer period – between the 19thand 24thMarch 2014. A list of stores that can accept bike donations after the trade-in event can be found at www.halfords.com/re-cycle
