Halfords’ generous customers have donated thousands of unwanted bikes to help local communities in Africa, in a joint initiative with charity Re~Cycle.

A trade in event that was organised by Britain’s biggest bike retailer will see 4,300 cycles support its charity partner Re~Cycle, a charity that sends unwanted bikes to Africa providing affordable transport and sustainable employment to people in need.

Halfords CEO Matt Davies said: “We had an absolutely fantastic response to the event, with many customers simply wanting to donate bikes to a great cause. We felt that this was an exciting way to make a difference by doing something that is closely linked with our business.”

Re~Cycle was set up in 1997 and since then has sent over 47,000 bikes as well as parts and tools to 16 different countries in Africa. Merlin Matthews, the founder of Re~Cycle, added: “In Africa a bike can mean children can get to school, farmers can transport goods to market and health workers can get to communities in need - literally it can mean life, so this generosity is very much appreciated.”

Halfords is already planning a future trade-in event with Re~Cycle. If you would like be informed when this takes place simply email emma.thomas@halfords.co.uk.
