HALFORDS’ Christmas ad captures the magic and nostalgia of a new bike this Christmas, by asking parents and kids – “Does anything beat a bike?” in its new TV campaign.

Launching today, the UK’s biggest cycle retailer takes on festive fads with its “Does anything beat a bike?” proposition, encapsulating the freedom of cycling for children while inspiring memories of the cherished Christmas present for adults from childhood.

The 30 second spot shows two children at home in the traditional post-lunch Christmas Day lull, watching television surrounded by discarded toys and games. They are shown rushing to the window to watch the neighbourhood’s cool kid glide past on his new Voodoo Malice BMX bike, as other children join him for a Christmas Day bike ride down their residential street.

The sepia-style videography evokes the memory and nostalgia of the universal magic moment of receiving a new bike for Christmas – and the joy and freedom of riding it for the first time with your friends.

Due to launch in a 30-second spot on TV on Wednesday, 29 October and a further slot during ITV’s The X Factor on Saturday, 1 November, Halfords will remind both parents and children of the adventure a new bike brings.

Halfords Marketing Director, Karen Bellairs said “We wanted our Christmas ad to capture the magic and nostalgia of Christmas and evoke the feelings of being a child surrounded by that magic on Christmas Day, along with all the expectation and excitement that brings.

“We’re also showing the confidence we have in our offer – we all remember the universal experience of receiving a new bike and wanting to get out and ride it straightaway on Christmas Day – after all, you can’t do wheelies on a tablet!”

Halfords is investing in its largest Christmas bike campaign yet and hopes to make children's faces up and down the country light up this Christmas morning. Many of the bikes will be kept in store until Christmas Eve under the retailer’s ‘Guarantee your dream bike’ pledge. For a deposit of £10, customers can choose their bike and collect it on Christmas Eve to keep it hidden from prying eyes until Christmas Day.

The “Does anything beat a bike?” ad will run in 30 second spots, with a 60 second spot for online and social. Ad agency Mother wrote and created the ad, which was directed by Aoife McArdle of Somesuch & Co.
