HALFORDS TO HAND OUT STICKERS URGING DRIVERS TO THINK
Halfords is backing a national "Think Bikes" campaign to make drivers more aware of cyclists on the road.
Stores will hand out a million mirror stickers to customers as a reminder to do a double take in their mirrors to check for cyclists and motorbikes in vehicle blind spot.
New figures show that nine out of ten drivers (93%) admit it is hard to see cyclists when driving and more than half are often surprised when a cyclist’s appears from nowhere.
Halfords has joined with the AA and the AA Charitable Trust with the support of British cycling and the Motorcycle Industry Association to launch the national awareness campaign today
(Friday 6th March).
The figures from an AA Populus poll of 17,629 drivers show failure to look properly is the most commonly cited contributory factor in UK road accidents (42%) adding further weight to the
need for road users to have greater awareness of each other The stickers, available from Halfords superstores nationwide, are designed to be placed on the passenger side mirror for cyclists
and the driver's side mirror for motorcycles. They are the idea of Tony Rich,AA patrolman of the year whose friend was killed in a motorcycle crash.
Halfords CEO Matt Davis said: “The Think Bike message is extremely compelling. We are delighted to be the destination for anyone wanting to collect a free mirror sticker, and support
the campaign.”
The AA Populus survey found 93% of drivers recognised cyclists are vulnerable and say they always give them space on the road. 89% say they always look out for cyclists. 91% admit it's
sometimes hard to see cyclists while driving and around half have a negative view of cyclists. 55% say they are often surprised when a cyclist appears from nowhere.
"Think Bikes" is part of an ongoing initiative to improve road safety for all road users. The campaign has the support of British Cycling, the Transport Secretary, the Road Safety Minister, the
Department of Transport, Police, the Mayor of London and a host of other cycling and freight groups.
