Trend for recording car journeys sees sales soar

  • Halfords sees sales of dash cams soar by 800 percent YOY

  • Drivers are buying into insurance reduction deals

  • Demand is so great, Halfords is introducing dash cam fitting service from April

Demand for dash cams – neat camera units that record car journeys - is booming at Halfords as the retailer reports sales of the latest safety gadget are up 800 percent YOY, based on in store and online sales. The peak in popularity comes as insurance providers offer reductions for drivers using dash cams and as sites like YouTube report millions of views of dash cam footage.

The latest dash cams offer peace of mind and reassurance to drivers, as the units take up little space in the car, and the high recording quality means every action on the road is captured – dash cams have even been used to record falling meteorites in Russia and a plane crash in Taiwan.

In the UK, drivers are using dash cams to record their day to day driving, leading Halfords to offer a fitting service in all stores from April for £30, meaning wires will be hidden under the dash board and leaving the power socket free.

Jon Oliver, Halfords’ technology category manager says: “This huge increase in sales has shown that dash cams aren’t just for shows like ‘Police, Camera, Action’ – our savvy customers are taking advantage of the lower insurance premiums on offer and are looking for peace of mind against knocks and scrapes while on the road. We predict dash cams will soon be seen in every car, going from a niche gadget to a driving must-have.”

Drivers can save up to 12.5% on their insurance policies with Swiftcover.com when they buy a dash cam at Halfords. The most popular model is the award-winning Nextbase InCarCam 402-G, £149.99, which has seen a 1,400 percent increase in sales YOY.
