What’s In a Name?

Report this content

A service offering personalising children’s bikes from Halfords has provided an intriguing snapshot of the latest trend in what parents call their kids and how kids want to be known.

Halfords analysed orders for their popular personalised bikes package which emblazons selected Apollo bikes with a child’s name across the frame.

It reveals the influence of celebrities, from actors to pop stars to fictitious characters from the world of computer games and cult TV shows which has led to more unexpected choices as well as common-place boys and girls names.

The top three most frequently requested girls names were Sophie, Olivia and Lily and the top three boys names were, Jack, Charlie and Oliver.

There was a significant nod to the world of established celebrities with Sienna, Kim, Cara, Eva, Miley, Autumn, Leo, Harrison, Rocky, Theo and Darcey all appearing

However, among the more mainstream were unusual requests with a plethora of less conventional spellings including: Charlee, Charli and Charly, Jac, Chelsea, Chelsey, Chelsie, Dylan, Dyllan, Dillon, Lucie, Luci, Abi, Sofi, Alana, Alanah, Alannah, Alanna and Alyx. Far from being made up many are based on cartoons or computer heros.

For parents and kids happy to have nicknames spelt out over their bike frames the list was endless. Some of the more eye-catching ones included: Ace, Boo Boo, Big Adz, Bubs, Bupe, Jo Jo, Mo Jo, Jax, Princess, Wazbo and Willeboy.

Halfords Karen Bellairs said: “We are delighted our service is proving so popular, adding the perfect finishing touch to a child's bike. We looked at all the name requests we have had since we introduced our personalisation service for selected children’s bikes. The top ten boys and girls names were not that far from what we expected, but the sheer number of different and varied spellings was a revelation. It’s clear the influence popular culture has. "
