Cecilia Malmström appointed Visiting Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law in Gothenburg, Sweden
Sweden's outgoing EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström has been named as the new holder of the Assar Gabrielsson Visiting Professorship at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg.
– I am looking very much forward becoming the holder of the Assar Gabrielsson Visiting Professorship next year. During my years in European politics I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge that I hope I can share with students and researchers at the School of Business, Economics and Law. It is in the meeting between theory and practice that knowledge grows and new ideas are born. I hope to be able to contribute to that, says Cecilia Malmström.
The assignment as Assar Gabrielsson professor comprises 20 percent during the period 1 January to 31 December 2020. As a Visiting Professor, Cecilia Malmström will meet students, researchers, alumni and partners to the School of Business, Economics and law, in discussions and lectures.
– I am extremely pleased to welcome Cecilia Malmström as Visiting Professor at the School of Business, Economics and Law in 2020. With her extensive experience from a successful work at the European Commission, she will strengthen the School's activities in areas that are crucial for Sweden's and the world's economic and political development, says Per Cramér, Dean of the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg.
Cecilia Malmström grew up in Gothenburg. She holds a PhD in political science from the University of Gothenburg, and for several years she taught in European politics, regionalism and terrorism. She has a long experience of cooperation within the EU, as a Member of the European Parliament in 1999-2006, and as European Commissioner since 2010. During the years 2006-2010 she served as Minister for EU Affairs in the Swedish government. In 2019, Cecilia Malmström was appointed International Swede of the Year.
The Assar Gabrielsson Visiting Professorship
The professorship was initiated in 1999 in memory of Assar Gabrielsson (co-founder of Volvo) and is funded through a gift from the Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law Foundation. The aim of the professorship is to provide students with wider knowledge about the application of the theories in business, economics and leadership that they encounter in their studies. Previous holders of the professorship include Inga-Britt Ahlenius, Björn Stigson, Marianne Nivert and Göran Carstedt.
