Harper Adams Students are to survey their own campus in a bid to win an award.

Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM) students at Harper Adams are to survey their own campus in a bid to win a professional practice award.

The second year students will work individually to produce appraisal reports for the farmland and buildings at the University College, as part of an assignment sponsored by property consultants, Carter Jonas.

Students will write descriptions of various properties including agricultural land and farm buildings, as if they were writing directly to a hypothetical client. They are tasked with advising on the various ways that properties can be marketed and sold to generate the most income.

They will also produce a letter and an invoice for their time spent working on the project with cash prizes of up to £300 awarded after the Christmas break.

Simon Keeble, REALM course manager, said: “This is the 5th year we have worked with Carter Jonas on this assignment.

“It really is invaluable to the students, it gives them a real-life situation to study and is similar to the tasks they will be asked to do during their placement year.”

Ex-Harper Adams student and Carter Jonas Associate, Andrew Black, set up the award. He said: "This award continues to demonstrate a long lasting commitment by Carter Jonas to create a tangible relationship with the students of Harper Adams by offering first-class case studies and a taste of what the real working life has to offer.

"Each year I receive emails from students at the beginning of their sandwich year thanking me for running the award as it has enabled them to "hit the ground running" when they are asked to produce this kind of work for real.

“The award is also an excellent showcase to demonstrate the forward thinking and progressive nature of Carter Jonas and many students in previous years have gone on to join us after graduating"
