Hemsö develops a healthcare center in Turku

Hemsö is developing a new 4,300 square meter healthcare center for substance abuse care in Tallbacken in Turku. A 20-year lease agreement has been signed with the Wellbeing Services County of Southwest Finland Varha. Hemsö's investment amounts to EUR 15 million.

In the new two-story building, the previously scattered social services in Turku will be gathered under one roof. Each unit will have its own entrance and will have spaces that can be separated from other patients if necessary.

– Varha is Hemsö's fourth largest tenant and the largest tenant in Finland. We are pleased to further expand our long-term cooperation. During the planning phase of the new healthcare center, we involved both patients and representatives from the various units. We captured needs and challenges in the daily operations to ensure that we create synergies between the units. The new premises support multidisciplinary collaboration along each patient's care path. The rooms are designed so that they can be adapted to supported housing at different levels, says Kirsi Viheriäranta, Project Manager at Hemsö in Finland.

Construction is scheduled to start in the summer and occupancy is expected in the fall of 2025. The construction company is Skanska. The new building will have energy class A and Hemsö's ambition is to certify it according to BREEAM Excellent.

Hemsö owns 80,000 square meters of social and health care properties in Finland. The Wellbeing Services County of Southwest Finland Varha is Finland's third-largest welfare county in terms of population and the second largest in terms of the number of employees. Since January 2023, Varha is responsible for public social and health care as well as for the rescue services in Southwest Finland. In the Wellbeing Services County of Southwest Finland Varha, there are 490,000 inhabitants and the welfare area employs 24,000 people. The new healthcare building is one of Hemsö's total of eleven buildings in the Turku hospital area at Tallbacken and the Runosbacken health station just outside central Turku.
