Hemtex, the market leader in the Swedish market for home textiles, lost market share during the first half of 2009. From January to June 2009, the value of the Swedish home textiles market declined by 3%, according to the most recent figures from the market research company GfK. The figures show a distinct increase in the market share for home textiles sold via discount stores.

Measured over the past 12 months, July 2008 – June 2009, the figures indicate that Hemtex’s market share amounted to 23.7% during the period, compared with 27.4% for the year-earlier period. The closest competitors had market shares of 13.0% and 10.2%, respectively, which is a marginal improvement on previous figures. “As previously established, the first half of 2009 commenced with weak demand for home textile products. The impact of the extensive readjustment program on which we have been working since the spring has not yet had any effect. However, we anticipate a somewhat stronger sales trend during the second half of 2009, as the company’s strategies are implemented – primarily within product range, purchasing and communication,” says Göran Ydstrand, President of Hemtex. During 2009, Hemtex lost shares in several different home textile product areas, although primarily in bed linen and curtain product groups. Hemtex reported positive trends and increased market shares in the bath towels and towels groups. Hemtex’s interim report for the May – July 2009 period will be published on Wednesday, September 2, 2009.
