Hexagon Composites ASA's business unit, Ragasco AS has been awarded a significant contract with a large European car manufacturer to supply fuel tanks for compressed natural gas (CNG) for one of their next generation passenger car vehicles. Ragasco was awarded the contract after the car manufacturer concluded an intensive technical and commercial benchmarking process. Start of production is planned for fourth quarter 2011.

The fuel tanks in composite are developed and produced by Ragasco in Norway, a modern and highly efficient production facility. Ragasco has extensive knowledge and experience in fully automated productions which has played a significant part in the signing of the agreement for these new containers. 

 

The composite cylinders are classified as Type 4 with polymer liner and a combination of fiberglass and carbon fiber wrapping which fulfill all international lifetime requirements with regards to safety and weight. 

 

With up to 70% lower weight compared to steel, the composite containers provide better operational economy and car handling characteristics compared to conventional steel containers. The underfloor CNG fuel tanks allow a driving range of approximately 400 kilometers.

 

Natural gas is an environmentally friendly form of fuel, as natural gas engines emit far fewer pollutants than conventional combustion engines.

 

The fuel tanks for passenger cars are part of Hexagon Composites' range of lightweight tanks for storage and transport of alternative gas. The Group's strategy is to offer innovative solutions that can solve global environmental challenges.
