When the European Athletics Indoor Championships open in Gothenburg, Sweden, today, HiQ is more than just the event’s digital partner. HiQ has also developed a game-inspired web platform for a campaign that is backed by European Athletics, the tourism development network in Gothenburg (Göteborg & Co) and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation with Swedish athletics legend, Carolina Klüft.

Eco Champs, which is launched to coincide with the European Athletics Indoor Championships, will be used in conjunction with several European athletics events and campaigns during 2013.

“European Athletics wants to spread knowledge about sustainability and environmental thinking and encourage commitment to these ideals. The vision for the 2013 European indoors is to create a world-class event that is also sustainable. As official digital partner, HiQ was the obvious first choice when we were looking for a company to develop the Eco Champs solution. We’re highly satisfied with the work they have done,” says European Athletics Council Member Sylvia Barlag, who is coordinating the organisation’s sustainability efforts.

Eco Champs is a responsive web solution that turns the spotlight on sustainability and the environment. Users can become Climate Heroes by pledging their allegiance to good green habits, compare their level of commitment to Carolina Klüft’s, and compete for tickets and other prizes by demonstrating their climate achievements in social media forums.

“Athletics provides an excellent channel for spreading the message about sustainability, particularly to young people. By linking athletics to climate issues we want to send a wake-up call to people and encourage them to become positively involved in questions that are vitally important to us all,” says Carolina Klüft, one of Sweden’s athletics heroes and project leader at the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation.

The goal is to fill the Scandinavium arena with Climate Heroes. That will set a benchmark for the level of commitment – a kind of relay baton to be passed on to the next arranging committee.

“We are proud about the assignment from European Athletics, in which we combine our experience from connecting sports and digital solutions, with our passion for simplifying people’s lives and improving the world through IT. As digital partner for the 2013 European indoors we are looking forward for the event to start,” says Lars Stugemo, President and CEO of HiQ.

HiQ is digital partner for the European Athletics Indoor Championships and enhances the event experience by producing the homepage for the championships and the official Championship app. Together with the arranging committee, HiQ raises the championships to a new level.
