HiQ INVOLVED IN PROJECT TO SECURE THE OCEANS

Secure Our Oceans helps countries, multilateral organisations, and NGOs find the right technology to safeguard their marine protected areas. In order to visualise the initiative and create global exposure, the initiator has chosen to work with HiQ.

The new secureoceans.org, developed by HiQ, was launched at a high-profile conference in Washington DC, with participants such as U.S. President Barack Obama, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio.

“Our oceans are a source of food and livelihood for more than one billion people. But our oceans are also some of the world’s largest crime scenes, due to illegal fishing. In order to curb the criminality, countries have started establishing marine protected areas – more than 5,000 in just the last few years. Secure Our Oceans works to strengthen the protection of these areas,” says Johan Bergenäs, Program Director for environmental crime issues at Stimson Center, the organisation behind the initiative.

“HiQ’s work within design and development has helped to give the initiative global attention. We have already seen results, like collaborations with U.S. authorities and new requests to perform pilot projects in South East Asia and Ecuador. HiQ has played an important part in making Secure Our Oceans easily accessible for decision makers,” Bergenäs continues.

There is no shortage of technology and innovations for marine protection – the problem is navigating among the different possibilities. With the help of Secure Our Oceans’ experts and understandable facts, it’s easier for decision makers to identify which technical solutions are needed for their specific challenges, as well as how to combine the solutions.

“Because of illegal fishing, 90 per cent of the world’s fisheries are overfished. This is simply catastrophic. At HiQ, our passion is to create a better world through technology, and we are proud to be a part of this extremely important work,” says Patrik Holm, Managing Director at HiQ in Linköping and Norrköping.

“I spend a lot of time on and by the ocean, and I see this development as both frightening and completely unacceptable. I’m therefore very happy when technology is used for both crime prevention and knowledge sharing. With smart technology and smooth communications we can work together and make the world better and safer,” Lars Stugemo concludes.

Stimson Center is a nonpartisan policy research centre working to solve the world’s greatest threats to security and prosperity. Secure Our Oceans is carried out in partnership with the National Geographic’s Pristine Seas project. HiQ has previously worked with Stimson in an initiative for protecting the black rhino from poachers.
