Only 12% of British adults describe themselves as perfectly happy, while 55% wish they could do something completely different in life, according to research by distance learning provider Home Learning College. Given the chance to alter one thing, a quarter would choose a new job. The desire for a new house comes second, with 19% of the vote, while 16% want to take things a step further and move to a different country. It would also seem that the wish to emigrate grows stronger as we get older. Only 14% of 18 to 24 year olds selected this as their primary goal, rising to 21% of the over 55s. Women report slightly higher levels of satisfaction, with 14% saying they are completely happy compared to 10% of men. “Some things in life are beyond our control, while other ambitions are very much within reach,” says Dave Snow, Academic Director of Home Learning College. “People’s ability to change job is dependent on a range of factors such as experience, qualifications and overall personality. If you’re feeling trapped in your current role then you should consider what positive changes can be made to enhance your employability. That might mean gaining new skills through vocational study or volunteering in an area related to your preferred type of work. “The main thing is to remember that change doesn’t happen overnight. Write down all the things you can do to make your dream a reality. If you want to change job, this could include updating your CV, doing some practice interviews or researching potential employers. This will put you in the right frame of mind and spark ideas of further ways to achieve your end goal.” For more information on Home Learning College’s range of professionally-accredited distance learning courses visit http://www.homelearningcollege.co.uk *Research conducted amongst 3,000 British adults in employment ENDS
