Ground broken for Kvarteret Johanna in Gothenburg on September 22
The transformation of Kvarteret Johanna is now entering a new phase. On September 22, Hufvudstaden, the City of Gothenburg and NCC jointly broke ground at the Brända site. The major reconstruction and new build will include a total of 44,000 square meters of outside gross area intended for offices, retail outlets and restaurant premises, and is scheduled to be ready at the end of 2025.
In all, Kvarteret Johanna will incorporate 44,000 sqm of outside gross area, of which 22,000 sqm is entirely new build at the heart of the bustling city space between Brunnsparken and Hotellplatsen. The area retains its expression with several different facades at street level, although internally all the properties will be designed in the same way. This creates considerable flexibility that makes it possible to adapt the size of offices to a variety of customer needs. Businesses will have the opportunity to own office space ranging in size from 150 sqm to 5,000 sqm on the same floor.
- “Breaking ground for Kvarteret Johanna together with the City of Gothenburg and our construction contractor NCC is an important milestone. We are also planting wild honeysuckle and heather, which are the county flowers of Bohuslän and Västergötland, and are examples of plants that will be grown in our Bohuslän nature garden on the roofs of buildings in the area,” says Fredrik Ottosson, Business Area Manager Hufvudstaden Gothenburg.
Hufvudstaden has chosen to name the site Johanna as a tribute to two Gothenburg institutions: the ‘Johanna in Brunnsparken’ statue and legendary restaurant Johanna which was located in the former building on the Brända site.
“The Johanna site has been a famous meeting place throughout history due to its many hotels and especially the restaurant Johanna. We want to revive this heritage in our plans for several new restaurant premises in the area. The plan is to have a restaurant at the top of the newly built property on the Brända site. A restaurant with a delightful, spacious roof terrace from where you can look out over the city,” says Ottosson.
