- First foreign commercial vehicle maker to satisfy Japan’s strict new emission standards

- Significant new features in response to local customers’ demands

(Seoul, Korea) Hyundai Motor Company unveiled its all-new Universe coach model on Nov. 25 in Japan accelerating its foray into the Japanese large-size bus market.

Hyundai is the first foreign auto maker in Japan to meet this stringent requirement. The all-new Universe runs on a Powertech engine equipped with a system for reducing noxious gases, allowing Hyundai to satisfy the world’s strictest emission regulations while boasting powerful performance: 313 kw (425 horsepower) with 1,891 Nm (193 kg·m) of torque.

The Universe answers customer demand with several new features. The coach is now available with 59 seats in addition to the existing 29/41/47/57-seat configuration. The exterior design has been improved by incorporating the door-open switch into the front bumper.

“We are very proud to introduce our all-new Universe, which satisfies Japan’s stringent Post New Long-term Emission Regulations. Hyundai will continue efforts to meet the needs of Japan’s most discerning customers by ensuring full compliance with local emission standards while expanding nationwide marketing and service networks,” Vice Chairman Choi said at the launching ceremony held in Tokyo.

Hyundai plans to exhibit the all-new Universe during the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. The Universe is expected to boost Hyundai’s image as the world’s leading commercial vehicle manufacturer.

※ The Japanese government implemented the Post New Long-term Emission Regulations in September, a new standard that drastically cut the allowable emission level for NOx and PM (particulate matter) by 65 and 63 percent, respectively, compared to the previous New Long-term Emission Regulations.

Japan’s Post New Long-term Emission Regulations are the equivalent of the EURO6 emission regulations that Europe will adopt in the near future.
