Belarusian Team Wins Google Hash Code 2016

On March 19, Belarusian programmers Roman Udovichenko and Sergei Zhgirovsky won the final round of Google Hash Code 2016, which took place in Paris, France.

Udovichenko and Zhgirovsky, both graduates of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science of the Belarusian State University (BSU), participated as a team named YMTeam and scored 1,017,218 points. Their opponents, teams Ababahalamaha of Russia and Die Bergbokbende of South Africa, scored 991,562 and 964,632 points, respectively.

Both Belarusian programmers work in the Minsk office of Yandex, a Russian Internet company which operates the largest search engine in Russia. Before Google Hash Code 2016, they participated in a number of competitions, such as ACM and Google Code Jam and won the silver at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) in 2013.

Udovichenko and Zhgirovsky received Google products as a prize.

Google Hash Code is a team–based programming competition organized by Google for students and industry professionals across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Participants pick their team and programming language, and then solve a real–time engineering problem.

The competition consists of two rounds: an online qualification round where teams participate from competition hubs and the final round, in which top scoring teams from the previous round were invited to Google Paris to compete. This year, 52 teams from 22 countries participated in the final round of the competition.
