Ingka Group joins businesses to unite with governments for a 1.5°C future
Ingka Group has signed a UN backed statement* to join an alliance of 155 other global companies to support the Uniting Business and Governments to Recover Better campaign, developed by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)* and its business ambition for 1.5°C future.
COVID-19 presents unprecedented circumstances for governments, people and businesses across the world and in light of the global pandemic, businesses are urging governments for a green recovery. The campaign aims to inspire and mobilize governments to re-imagine a better future grounded in bold climate action, along with efforts to revive the economy.
Just as the pandemic, the climate crisis respects no borders and impacts people, businesses and society across the world with wildfires, heat waves, flooding and drought. There is a need of ambitious global actions more urgent than ever to transition faster to a green, clean and just recovery, aligning policies with the latest climate science.
“This will be the most important decade for humankind, and we need to work together to accelerate action to build back better. Climate will not wait for COVID-19 and we still have it in our own hands to change the direction of the climate and use the recovery post COVID-19 to tackle two crises at once. Governments and business have the opportunity to initiate and drive the just transition towards a net zero carbon economy and society with jobs that the next generations will benefit from, says Jesper Brodin, CEO, Ingka Group.
“IKEA remains committed to become climate positive and circular by 2030 and contribute to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C. Two years ago we set Science Based Targets and are taking actions to reduce our climate footprint, for example by consuming 100% renewable energy, offering zero-emissions home deliveries and enabling more than 1 billion people to live in sustainable and healthy ways,” he concludes.
Ingka Group is a part of a community of 850+ pioneering companies committed to set ambitious emissions reduction targets through the Science Based Targets initiative. Targets adopted by companies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are considered “science-based” if they are in line with what the latest climate science says is necessary to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement — to limit global warming to well-below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.
Ingka Group’s emission reduction goals are approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative, the targets are consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.
Recently, Ingka Group joined the “green recovery alliance” launched by the European Parliament for a renewed commitment by its stakeholders to address the social and economic consequences of the coronavirus outbreak, in addition to the long-term climate change initiatives.
By 2030, the aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from across all Ingka Group operations by 80% in absolute terms, compared to 2016. Ingka Group also commits to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions from customer and co-worker travel and customer deliveries 50% per person by financial year 2030, compared to 2016. Inter IKEA Group, which is responsible for developing the IKEA range and supply chain, commits to reduce emissions relating to home furnishing products and food by at least 15% in absolute terms for the same period.
Climate positive commitments and achievements include:
- Since 2009, Ingka Group has invested EUR 2.5 billion in wind farms and solar panels and the renewable energy generation will now exceed consumption in units (stores and shopping centres).
- Owns and operates 900,000 solar modules on-site and 534 wind turbines off-site in 14 countries.
- Between September 2018 and August 2019 Ingka Group generated renewable energy equivalent to 93.4% of the energy used in our operations, up from 81% last year.
- The climate footprint of Ingka Group operations (scope 2) was 45.8% lower than if we had purchased the average electricity mix available in the countries where we operate.
- Ingka Group is committed to consuming 100% renewable electricity across all the countries where we operate by 2025.
