Four of the world’s smallest otters have been born and successfully reared at Blackpool Zoo for the first time in its 38 year history. The cute quartet of Oriental Small Clawed otters are now out and about after spending their first two months being cared for in the holt by their mother. When they are born, they weigh around 50g, are toothless, practically immobile and their eyes are still closed. Animal mad Taylor-Dean Brandreth from Rainhill in St Helens is officially a bookworm! The nine year old has been crowned the winner of Blackpool Zoo’s monthly bookworm competition, which was launched on World Book Day this year. On a recent visit to the zoo Taylor-Dean, who attends Longton Lane Community Primary School, spotted the competition and instantly knew the answer to the question: Where did toad live in the book ‘Wind in the Willows’, which is, of course, Toad Hall. Keepers at Blackpool Zoo are really getting to grips with the latest feathery arrival. A baby Demoiselle Crane, which hatched in May, is being hand reared after he was removed from his parents’ nest in the interest of his well-being. Specialist keepers are feeding him on crane pellets, chopped fish, fruit, vegetables and insects, a diet which mirrors that of his traditional diet in his native Asia. TELEGRAPH POLES WANTED FOR GORILLA CLIMBING FRAME!

Blackpool Zoo appeals to the nationBlackpool Zoo is appealing to the nation for telegraph pole poles or tall trees, which will help to build a climbing frame for gorillas. Since the birth of the zoos first ever Western Lowland Gorilla in May the gorillas have not been allowed to have access to part of their outdoor area as the surrounding moat would be too dangerous for the infant.
