Acorn Truck Sales has delivered a Euro VI Iveco Stralis rigid to Lemon Groundwork Solutions, a specialist in the construction sector and accredited through Transport for London’s (TfL) Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS).

The Stralis Hi-Street AD260S31Y/P features an Iveco Cursor 9 engine, which uses Iveco’s HI-SCR system to achieve Euro VI limits via a simplified after-treatment system and without the use of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Iveco says this engine technology offers multiple advantages including weight reduction, optimised fuel consumption and increased durability thanks to a less complex, yet highly efficient, technology.

The 26 tonne 6x2 rigid marks an addition to an existing 10-strong truck fleet at Lemon Groundwork Solutions and is mounted with a heavy-duty platform body. A powerful Hiab crane is also fitted for loading and unloading steel reinforcements and groundwork products.

Colin Prior, Managing Director of Lemon Groundwork Solutions, which has depots in Wickford, Essex, and Rugby, Warwickshire, considered at least two other manufacturers for the order, but ultimately Iveco’s Euro VI engine solution and the marque’s proven reliability record proved decisive in securing the order.

He says: “We liked Iveco’s solution for meeting this new emission standard. We could have rushed and bought another EEV-rated Iveco last year, but in opting for the Euro VI Stralis, we are future proofing ourselves for the next 10 to 15 years. It has also fitted perfectly with our planned strategy for fleet growth.”

The nature and location of Lemon Groundwork Solutions’ business means it is required to undertake regular deliveries in London.

Like many vehicles in the fleet, the new Stralis has been specified to be ‘Crossrail-compliant’, meaning it is fitted with Fresnel lenses and side-scan equipment which produces an audible beep in the cab when a cyclist is on the left inside space. It also features under-run guards to prevent cyclists from coming into contact with truck wheels, plus the appropriate warning signs for cyclists and pedestrians.

Other features include reversing sensors, a hands-free telephone kit and a light bar, for maximum visibility at night. This is on top of an already comprehensive standard specification which sees the Hi-Street day cab featuring the same comfy seats offered in the range-topping long-distance Hi-Way model.

Commenting on his fleet’s preference for operating Ivecos, Prior adds: “They’ve always served us well, ever since the first Iveco joined the business in 2002. We keep our trucks for at least 10 years, so it’s essential we have confidence in the manufacturer and the supporting dealer network. This order reinforces that confidence; plus the Stralis looks great in our distinctive company livery, especially with this new generation cab.”

The Stralis Hi-Street will be in operation five days per week and is expected to cover approximately 40,000 miles per annum, with servicing carried out by Acorn Truck Sales in Crayford, which became an Iveco dealer in early 2013.

Its Cursor 9 engine is capable of producing 310 hp at 1,675 – 2,200 rev/min and up to 1,300 Nm of torque at 1,100 – 1,675 rev/min, driven through an automated EuroTronic gearbox manufactured for Iveco by ZF.
