Transport and distribution specialist Eddie Stobart is putting two Iveco ECOSTRALIS tractor units to the ultimate test within its extensive transport operation.

The company, one of the most recognisable and strongest brands in the country, says it will be closely monitoring the performance of the Iveco vehicles over the coming months.  The trucks have been named ‘Sophie’ and ‘Lynda Dawn’, following a long-established tradition that all Eddie Stobart vehicles be identified by a unique girl’s name.

Both tractor units will operate from Eddie Stobart’s depot in Carlisle; one of 40 company-owned sites within a network spanning the UK, Ireland and Europe.  They will be used for general haulage nationwide, operating with tri-axle curtainside trailers at a gross vehicle weight of up to 44 tonnes.

Stobart expects the ECOSTRALIS will attract significant attention on the road, since they mark the first Iveco vehicles to join its current fleet of more than 2,250 tractor units.  Both vehicles have been supplied by Iveco dealer North East Truck & Van and are expected to remain in service with Eddie Stobart for the next three years, clocking-up approximately 160,000 km per annum.

They are powered by a re-mapped version of the FPT Cursor 10 engine, which is unique to the ECOSTRALIS and helps to reduce fuel consumption whilst maintaining performance.  The EEV-rated 10.3 litre engine is capable of producing up to 460 hp and a maximum torque of 2,100 Nm between 1,050 and 1,550 rev/min.

Iveco has matched this engine with an array of additional fuel-saving features which make the ECOSTRALIS stand out for its supreme efficiency.  These include an ECOSWITCH device that uses the vehicle weight information from the ECAS / EBS systems to limit engine torque according to the truck’s gross vehicle weight – ensuring overall performance is maintained in line with that of a fully laden vehicle.   This allows fuel consumption to be minimised during acceleration without affecting overall speed capability.

The ECOSTRALIS also features a EuroTronic transmission with a new ECOfleet mode which automatically adjusts to the loading of the vehicle to help fine-tune fuel economy.  They are also supplied with Michelin X Energy SaverGreen low rolling resistance tyres as original equipment, and benefit from a higher gearing and an 85 km/h speed limiter to further optimise fuel performance.

All new ECOSTRALIS models are supplied with a three year / 420,000 km* manufacturer’s warranty and include a state-of-the-art Blue&Me Fleet telematics system as standard.
