Iveco dealer Sherwood Truck & Van has delivered two new Stralis Hi-Way 6x2 twin-steer tractor units into operation with Barry Proctor Services, based on the competitive fuel-performance of existing Stralis heavy trucks in its fleet – versus competitor models.

Both vehicles stand out for featuring Iveco’s latest ‘Efficiency Package’, incorporating three new technologies designed to further reduce running costs. These include an Eco-Roll function, which constantly monitors the road angle looking for opportunities to shift into neutral on downhill stretches, re-engaging a gear at the end of a descent for normal operation. Vehicles also benefit from a new engine oil management system which reduces energy absorption within the oil pump and ensures faster warming of the engine. This is coupled with new OW-20 low viscosity engine oil to further boost engine efficiency and stretch oil service internals.

The new tractors replace two trucks being de-fleeted after four busy years’ operation with the Stoke-on-Trent-based haulier. One of these trucks was an existing Stralis, and the driver made a special request to Managing Director Barry Proctor to stay behind the wheel of a Stralis, praising the driving experience and on-board comfort.

Barry Proctor explains: “Our experience with Iveco and Sherwood has always been strong. When we looked at the whole life cost benefits of running the Stralis, particularly with the new efficiency features added and the driver’s personal recommendation – it made the decision very straightforward.”

The Stralis Hi-Way comes as standard with an impressive specification list, with the only aftermarket additions selected by the customer being a forward facing camera and RAM Tracking device, which is in-line with Barry Proctor Services’ insurance guidelines and driver monitoring procedures. A microwave oven has also been installed into one of the many storage compartments on board, for added driver comfort.

“Our success is based on providing an excellent service, using top-of-the-range vehicles, which is recognised throughout the UK,” says Proctor. “Adding the new Ivecos to our fleet is directly in-line with our corporate strategy.”

Another welcome addition to the current model Stralis Hi-Way has been the Iveconnect infotainment and driving support system. The technology includes an advanced truck satellite navigation function which automatically calculates the best route to be taken according to the weight and dimensions of the vehicle, which are entered by the driver – plus benefits from an integrated Iveco dealer locator function, speed limit alerts and live traffic information. This advanced factory fitted system has removed the need for Barry Proctor Services to install an aftermarket sat-nav system, which it has been required to do on other vehicles in its fleet.

The two Stralis Hi-Way AS440S48TX/P tractor units are fitted with an 11 litre engine which produces 480 hp between 1,500 and 1,900 rev/min, and up to 2,250 Nm of torque between 950 and 1,500 rev/min. This engine stands out for using Iveco’s HI-SCR technology to meet stringent Euro VI emission limits without the need for regeneration. This is a major benefit as it reduces the downtime which vehicles utilising EGR may experience on a regular basis during regeneration phases.

Based in Stoke-on-Trent, Barry Proctor Services is the primary contractor for Wienerberger PLC and also operates a nation-wide service for numerous other brick, block and tile manufacturers. Established in 1985, the company has grown in size from an initial four employees to nearly 40 today. The haulage provider has also been the preferred company for the specialist transportation of architectural stone for 30 years.
