Iveco to carry Impact Attenuators for Crash Cushion Rental Solutions
Basildon, September 14, 2015
Crash Cushion Rental Solutions has taken delivery of its 20th Iveco Eurocargo Euro VI 4x2 rigid (180E25S) and is now halfway to receiving all 40 vehicles ordered for its new fleet. The Manchester-based rental company is one of the country’s newest providers of Impact Protection Vehicles (IPV's), also known as crash cushion or impact attenuator trucks, and placed its entire order with Iveco.
Supplied by Brighouse-based Northern Commercials, the fleet of Eurocargo rigids each feature bespoke traffic management bodywork built by PPS Commercials and the cushions manufactured by Verdegro, being supplied by Highway Care Ltd.
Phil Glaiser, Fleet Manager at Crash Cushion Rental Solutions, says: “The highway maintenance sector has very specific requirements when it comes to the vehicles they want to use. After looking at all the options we settled on the Iveco Eurocargo as it ticked all the boxes. One of the major selling points was the fact that Iveco offer a factory fitted passenger bench seat in the high-roof sleeper cab which ensures maximum internal cab space for the driver and two operatives. The cab also offers easy walk through access – allowing the operatives to enter and exit the vehicle without having to open their doors onto traffic.”
In addition to the crash cushion, which reduces the impact of a collision by up to 50 per cent, the truck’s traffic management body features sign storage compartments, a cone storage area to the rear of the working platform, light and sandbag storage compartments under the vehicle, cone wells to the left and right of the working areas, a moveable load locking system for both cone and sign storage points and a moveable railing system.
However, Glaiser explains that it was not just the versatility of the Eurocargo model that led to it being the vehicle of choice for Crash Cushion Rental Solutions: “Because of the mileage and safety critical nature of the job that these vehicles have to do, we need our fleet to be both economical and reliable. In particular we found the 18 tonne Eurocargo offers us the load carrying capacity our customers required while the HI-SCR Euro VI engine delivers excellent fuel consumption.”
Due to the nature of the work that these vehicles are required to perform and the tight operational hours, reliability is also a key factor. While the vehicles typically work at night they are sometimes required to run 24/7 and can carry heavy loads, while working on a demanding stop/start basis.
Featuring a 250hp, 6.7 litre engine the Eurocargo produces up to 850Nm of torque between 1,250 and 2,050 rev/min. This power is delivered via a six speed automated transmission which allows for greater driver comfort and control.
“The response from our clients has been tremendous,” says Glaiser. “The vehicles have been delivered straight from Northern Commercials to our customers and as yet we have not had one returned from hire.”
Each of the vehicles has been supplied on a full Iveco Elements repair and maintenance agreement, which covers all inspections and maintenance. Work can be carried out at any location within the nationwide Iveco dealer network, ensuring maximum convenience for the end user.
