Upholstered furniture specialist DFS is supporting its ongoing store expansion programme with an order for 50 new Iveco trucks, including the first new generation Stralis Hi-Road tractor units to join its 240-strong fleet.

Supplied by Guest Truck & Van, the vehicles include a mix of fleet additions and replacements, continuing the furniture retailer’s 30 year tradition of specifying Iveco commercial vehicles. The order includes six Stralis Hi-Road 4x2 low height tractor units and 44 Eurocargo rigids, including a pair of 18 tonners and 42 7.5 tonne home delivery vehicles.

Barry Dennis, Commercial Director at DFS, says: “Few companies can say they’ve been a one marque fleet for three decades. It’s the performance and reliability of the Iveco vehicles in our fleet that keeps us coming back.

“We run a busy fleet and we don’t have time for downtime, so our decision to run Ivecos works well for us and we enjoy excellent aftersales support from the Iveco dealer network nationwide.”

Supplied on an Iveco Elements repair and maintenance contract, the new trucks are expected to remain in service for between five and six years. The Stralis’ will be used for trunking from the company’s three manufacturing sites and its central despatch hub, whilst the Eurocargos will take responsibility for home deliveries nationwide. All vehicles are fitted with sophisticated vehicle tracking systems to ensure maximum security of goods in transit.

The Stralis Hi-Roads – built specifically for distribution and fleet operations as well as medium to long-haul domestic missions – operate with 40ft box trailers wrapped in the company’s striking new corporate livery and will clock-up approximately 150,000 km a year.

Mr Dennis adds: “We saw the new Stralis Hi-Road for the first time at the CV Show and that sealed the deal for us. We see genuine potential for it to reduce running costs and the on-board package for the driver has been further enhanced.”

The new Stralis Hi-Roads are powered by EEV-rated FPT Industrial 10.3 litre Cursor 10 engines, which are capable of producing up to 420 hp between 1,550 and 2,100 rev/min, plus 1,900 Nm of torque between 1,050 and 1,550 rev/min.

Like all Stralis’ in the DFS fleet they feature a 12-speed automated EuroTronic transmission which is manufactured for Iveco by ZF. This transmission is designed to reduce total cost of ownership by always selecting the ideal gear based on economic driving principles. It also protects the transmission against over-revving and reduces clutch wear, noise and fuel consumption.

Each of the Eurocargo rigids is mounted with an Adcliffe demountable box body and will make an average of 12 deliveries per day. Based across a network of more than 80 stores, the company’s fleet of nearly 200 Eurocargos cover between 30,000 km and 40,000 km a year.
