IVU signs hosting contract with Trenitalia
Italian state railway to use “software as a service”
Berlin, 1 July 2015 – Since 2010, Trenitalia – a company owned by the Italian state railway – has planned and managed around 15,000 employees and more than 5,000 vehicles using software developed by IVU Traffic Technologies AG. Now, the Berlin-based IT company is also assuming responsibility for hosting the entire system.
The IVU.rail staff roster planning and operational control modules of Trenitalia have been running on IVU servers since April. As a result, everything will come from a single source in the future – a help desk, server maintenance and the regular installation of software updates will be handled by IVU technicians. IVU is collaborating closely with IBM here. At the IBM data centre in Pero near Milan, the efficient deployment of Trenitalia resources is controlled by around 500 processing cores with more than 3 TB of RAM. A fully virtualised environment ensures flexibility. The memory and processing power of the servers can be adjusted without interrupting operation, for example when CPU-intensive optimization measures need to be implemented.
The outsourcing of server operations has had no effect on the work performed by the dispatchers at Trenitalia. Via a secure, dedicated MPLS connection, employees access the high-availability servers where they can carry on working as usual with the familiar IVU.rail interface. In addition, the mobile employee portal is now integrated via a secured area, thereby allowing drivers to access their services online and in real time without endangering system security. Furthermore, open interfaces allow surrounding systems to be easily connected to the IVU solution. In day-to-day operations, there is nothing to suggest that these systems are sometimes hundreds of miles apart. But if users do have any problems or questions, IVU provides a 24/7 help desk for technical support.
“The consolidation of the system over the past few years has convinced us to entrust IVU with hosting as well to unite the technical and operational aspects and deliver system updates faster than ever before,” says Danilo Gismondi, CIO of Trenitalia. “The successful summer timetable change confirms that we made the right decision.” Oliver Grzegorski, Head of Development and member of the IVU Management Board: “We are delighted that Trenitalia has asked us to manage the entire system. This underlines their confidence in us and shows that our software-as-a-service solution offers considerable benefits even for large railway companies.”

IVU Traffic Technologies AG has been working for 40 years with some 400 software engineers to ensure that transport in the world’s major cities operates reliably and on time. People and vehicles in expanding cities are continually on the move – a logistical challenge which calls for intelligent and reliable software systems. The standardised software products of the IVU.suite and tailor-made IT solutions are used to plan, optimise and control the scheduling of vehicle fleets and personnel. Other systems support the choice of branch locations or ensure that election results are determined correctly.
