SBB Cargo chooses IVU.rail
IVU rail planning and dispatching solution for Swiss freight transport
Every year, SBB Cargo transports more than 40 million tonnes of goods by rail throughout all of Switzerland, involving some 370 engines and 3,000 personnel. Their operational planning and dispatching will in future be carried out with IVU.rail. In July the subsidiary of the Swiss Federal Railways decided to introduce the integrated rail solution for personnel and resource planning. They were convinced in particular by the high degree of standardisation of the IVU system. IVU.rail will combine all planning and dispatching functions for rail vehicles and personnel in one system, while integrating existing components such as the load planning tool.
The goal of SBB Cargo is to considerably reduce the complexity of its previous system by the introduction of a standard product and in this way to reduce the maintenance requirements and the operating costs. The IVU solution has been used successfully in projects around the world both for cargo transport and for passenger transport. IVU.rail is the only standard solution for both rail sectors.
The introduction of the system by SBB Cargo is already proceeding at full speed. The first project team members are currently being trained to operate IVU.rail. From the spring of 2014, all duties and vehicle workings of SBB Cargo are to be planned with IVU.rail. With the introduction of the timetable for 2014/2015, the dispatching functions are also to be carried out with IVU.rail instead of the old system.
“Whether for passenger transport or goods transport, the main aim of all planning is to optimise the utilisation of resources. And here IVU.rail provides a solution for the entire rail sector”, explains IVU section manager Christian Teschner. “With its modular structure, IVU.rail can readily be adapted to meet the requirements in each specific case. This applies both for public transport with its short headway times as well for freight transport which often has to be planned at short notice. I am very pleased that the potential of IVU.rail has now convinced another major cargo customer.”

IVU Traffic Technologies AG has been working for more than thirty-five years with some 350 software engineers to ensure that transport in the world’s major cities operates reliably and on time. People and vehicles in expanding cities are continually on the move – a logistical challenge which calls for intelligent and reliable software systems. The standardised software products of the IVU.suite and tailor-made IT solutions are used to plan, optimise and control the scheduling of vehicle fleets and personnel. Other systems support the choice of branch locations or ensure that election results are determined correctly.
