A Santa Fe Gathering at Arroyo Gallery

(Scottsdale, AZ – July 19, 2011) – Santa Fe’s Indian Market always brings the best Western artists to Santa Fe. This year Arroyo Gallery has five of the very finest artists – and all are award-winning artists of Western Artists of America (WAA). Pictorial leather sculpture by Roger Kull; still life paintings from Choctaw Native American Judith Durr (Best of Show Presentation Award – Northeastern Arizona Fine Art Association 2011 Juried Show); Western bronze sculptures from Tim Harmon (gold medal winner at the WAA Show at the Pearce Museum); Native American children and elders as painted in oil by Sharon Brening (gold medal winner at WAA Show at the Pearce Museum); and beautiful stone/bronze sculpture creations from Mike Greenfield revealing the soul of the stone and the spirit of the people.

“Hosting these five award-winning WAA artists for the Indian Market is a thrill and a honor,” said Scott Wilson MacLaren, owner of Arroyo Gallery. “Our kickoff weekend festivities for the Indian Market include not only the opening night on Friday, August 19, 2011 of ‘A Santa Fe Gathering,’ but also a plein-air painting seminar on Saturday, August 20 by Judith Durr as well as a seminar on leather pictorial sculpture by renowned sculptor Roger Kull – all in the lovely patio outdoors at Arroyo Gallery.”

Roger Kull has also provided the signature sculpture, ‘A Santa Fe Gathering,’ for the exhibition. The work will be auctioned off over the weekend with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the Santa Fe Conservation Trust – dedicated to preserving New Mexico’s stunning landscapes.

The piece incorporates the look of weather wood, tile and stucco on Kull’s usual medium of leather. But, the composition encompasses the tradition that centralizes Santa Fe Art.

“My thought was I wanted my art to tie back, connect so to speak, to the non-profit that was going to benefit from the auction proceeds. The Santa Fe Conservation Trust, whose mission is to protect the Santa Fe landscape, is a worthy organization that needs our support so that years from now we can still enjoy this wonderful area’s natural beauty.”

“I would like my art to reflect the timelessness of the Santa Fe lifestyle and the environment that inspires it,” Kull says. “’A Santa Fe Gathering’ is part of my Santa Fe collection which is different from what I mostly create, the Western Four Corners Historical View.”

Kull continues, “The Territorial Ranch Santa Fe style has many facets. There’s the Pennsylvania Dutch in the stylized birds on old pottery. You’ll find old wicker and fancy eastern board furniture, fabrics, and clothing all left, literally, on the trail. These traits, combined with the Spanish influence, formed the Territorial Ranch Santa Fe style. This combination of the old materials and items from the environment make a wonderful mixing and blending of textures and colors. From this I created my leather sculpture, A Santa Fe Gathering.”

As a Native American, Judith Durr is especially glad to be in Santa Fe during Indian Market.

“My Southwestern oil paintings are created from respect for my Choctaw/Cherokee heritage. I preserve the legacy of the First People’s artifacts and rugs portrayed in my oil paintings. However, I paint artifacts from tribes and clans throughout the Americas. By capturing the emotions of the viewer, my objective is illusion,” said Durr.
