Still life paintings from Choctaw Native American Judith Durr and Southwestern pictorial leather sculpture by Roger Kull are now featured at the Pueblo Sedona Gallery. Both artists are members of Western Artists of America.

(Sedona, AZ - July 28, 2011) – Beginning August 3, 2011, the Pueblo Sedona Gallery begins showcasing two master artists, members from the prestigious Western Artists of America. One of the leading galleries of the area is operated by Hopi artist Gerry Quotskuyva and his wife, Debbi Menig. Raised in the Southwest, and a native of Arizona, master artist Judith Durr resides in Cave Creek, Arizona with her artist husband, Roger Kull. Arizona artist, Kull, broke the “leather craft” barrier and took his skill into a gallery quality level. He has been creating his signature style of three-dimensional realism for over 30 years.

Looking to expand the selection of artwork in their gallery, Quotskuyva and Menig recently re-opened Pueblo Sedona Gallery in a new location.

“When we moved to our larger location, we were interested in bringing in some new artists to add to the grouping that was already successful for us, Quotskuyva explained. “Roger Kull and Judith Durr, as a husband and wife team, are the perfect additions to the gallery. And, we are proud to have them join our family.”

“Sedona is a magical place for art,” Durr recently said. “Both of us will now have our artworks carried by Pueblo Sedona Gallery in Sedona and we couldn’t be more pleased.”

Quotskuyva is also happy about the addition of Kull and Durr to the Pueblo Sedona Gallery. He is enthusiastic about these two master WAA artists.

“Roger’s Kull’s approach of taking the craft form of leatherwork into the fine art world is a concept that I can relate to. It’s fun to question the judges and art critics’ standard concepts and make them think outside of their comfort zone.”

“The still life work by Judith Durr covers an area in the Native American art world that I feel is lacking, and I’m glad to see her taking on the challenge. Her realism brings into play the textures of the materials. You can almost feel the weave of the rugs and the beadwork on the moccasins as you look at them.”

About Roger Kull – Sculptor

Arizona master sculptor, Roger Kull, broke the “leather craft” barrier and took his art into a gallery and museum quality level. Described as Southwestern Pictorial Leather Sculpture, Kull’s signature style is three-dimensional realism. His recent acceptance into the invitation-only Western Artists of America (WAA) now has him competing at their annual exhibit and show with other sculptors whose work is more traditionally in wood, clay, bronze and stone. Having worked with over 14,000 hides in the 30-plus years of his artistic career shows the incredible demand for his work.

Kull approached his art in a very non-traditional way taking the technique of general leatherwork, and chose only a saddle maker’s knife and clay modeler’s spoon as the sole implements that create his incredible artwork. There is no hammering, no stamping, only a sculpting process that forms the back bone of his technique.

Utilizing the natural hews of leather and specialized dyes along with the colorful blues of turquoise, there is a continuous flow between tradition and innovation creating constant interest in this uniquely sculpted leather.

Kull’s artwork is recognized, appreciated and represented by several prominent galleries and sold internationally. His fine art hangs in the permanent collection of the prestigious Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville, Georgia and the Johnson-Humrick Museum in Roscoe Village, Ohio.

About Pueblo Sedona Gallery

After a three year hiatus from the Sedona art scene, Hopi artist Gerry Quotskuyva and his wife, Debbi Menig have recently re-opened Pueblo Sedona Gallery in a new location – in Creekside Plaza. As artist-in-residence, Gerry creates his award winning contemporary Katsina carvings and paintings on site in addition to introducing his new bronze series.

“A large part of my desire to create art is based on education,” says Gerry. “In the Hopi culture, one purpose of the katsina societies is to provide teachings to the children. This concept has extended beyond our culture and has gained attention from people all over the world.”

Gerry is a member of the Bear Strap Clan from the Second Mesa Village of Shungopavi. Some of the gallery’s artists include Alva Pittman (oil paintings & gourd bowls), Becky Anderson (plein air oil paintings & beaded jewelry), Frances Quotskuyva (acrylic paintings), Joyce Killebrew (bronze figurative sculptures) Kathie Gabriel (sacred & ceremonial feather fans) and Debbi Menig (gourd bowls, leather shields & painted drums). To round out a larger gallery space, several new local artists were invited to join the fold including Rob Koehl (metal & copper sculptures), Lisa Peterson Love (intuitive energy photographs), Stevan Evans (laminated wood & tooled leather wall plaques, bowls, boxes & pendants), and Kathryn Johnson (watercolors & batiks).
