Take part in Bolton’s sportswear revolution

Bolton has made sporting history before – athletics giant Reebok was founded here in 1895.

Now VO2 wants to open a new chapter. The sportswear company, which specialises in garments for triathlons, running and cycling, has launched an online crowdfunding bid to let local people get in on the action.

The city centre company has been working hand-in-hand with The University of Bolton in order to develop cutting-edge sports fabrics fit for the toughest challenges.

They have a number of patent applications in place and support from international athletes.

Founder Matt Tomkin said: “As a regular participant in triathlons, I realised there was a gap in the market when it comes to producing high-quality sportswear for these events. Working with athletes and scientists, we’re planning to develop apparel that will help people fulfil their potential.”

The firm’s scientific nous comes from the University of Bolton’s Professor Subhash Anand MBE. With seven patents to his name already and international consultancy experience, the academic is hoping to push VO2 to the next level.

He said: “The Technical Textiles are improving all the time. Innovation and creativity can really make a dent in the sportswear market.

“The possibilities for the development are huge and we’re excited about producing new designs.”

VO2 have already won praise from up-and-coming Team GB triathlete Amy Kilpin, who gets all her race suits from the company.

She said: “The design team have been great – even the smallest advantage can be crucial in competitive events, so what you wear really matters.”

VO2 also provide a full outfit for Team True Spirit, a Help For Heroes-affiliated organisation that helps injured ex-servicemen with their rehabilitation through triathlon-focused training.

Interested parties can find the funding bid online – it is running through the CrowdCube platform.

For £10 upwards, investors will be able to gain a share in the brand.
