K2A appointed main developer for the first time

K2A Knaust & Andersson Fastigheter has been appointed main developer for the Västra Stadsdelsnoden (Western District Node) community development project in Uppsala. As main developer, K2A has an option agreement that offers an exclusive right to negotiate with Uppsala Municipality on land allocation for approximately 200 apartments.

This is the first time in the history of K2A that it has been appointed main developer. The assignment means K2A will support the municipal organisation during initiation, planning and implementation of the project. It is estimated that the zoning plan for the area will enable the development of 1,900 apartments, of which at least 30 per cent will be rental apartments.

“This is a milestone for K2A. To be part of creating a green city district from scratch is a tremendous opportunity for us to break new ground as a company and also contribute towards sustainable development in Uppsala Municipality,” says Johan Knaust, CEO of K2A.

The Västra Stadsdelsnoden community development project is part of the Uppsalapaketet (Uppsala package), an agreement between the government, Uppsala Municipality and Region Uppsala to build 33,000 new apartments, a new tramway and new rail tracks. K2A is one of two main developers in the project. The other is Bonava. K2A and Bonava will collaborate with Uppsala Municipality and local residents in the area to decide on the design of the district. Work will begin in June 2022 by listening to local residents as part of citizen dialogues.

The Västra Stadsdelsnoden will have a strong focus on environmental sustainability and a high level of ambition with respect to timber construction. The area is planned to form part of BoExpo 2029 in Uppsala Municipality.

“Uppsala continues to have high climate ambitions and all of the south-east of the city will be carbon-neutral by 2030. We are therefore pleased to involve a main developer that has a clear focus on sustainability and climate efficiency,” says Erik Pelling, Chairman of the Municipal Executive Board in Uppsala.

K2A – the green real estate company – has the real estate sector’s most robust climate target and in 2020 became first in the world to have its share classified as green. Uppsala has been named the national winner of the WWF’s One Planet City Challenge on the last two occasions the award was given and has also previously been named as international winner of the global city challenge.
