K2A inaugurates unique energy-plus wooden building

Today, the first tenants are moving into K2A’s newly built energy-plus building Generatorn in Linköping. The building is unique in its kind and probably the largest wooden energy-plus building built in Sweden. It consists of 90 student apartments and 22 sheltered housing units.

Earlier this week, K2A announced that the company’s student accommodation – from Lund in the south to Kiruna in the north – was basically fully occupied at the start of the term. The new student accommodation in Linköping is also starting the term full to capacity.

“We’re very proud of this project in which we’re minimising emissions in both the construction and operational phases,” says Johan Knaust, CEO of K2A. “The fact that the student accommodation is already fully occupied despite it just being inaugurated also shows that there is great demand throughout Sweden for climate-smart, space-efficient and high quality student accommodation in attractive locations.”

An energy-plus building means that, on an annual basis, the building produces more energy than is consumed in the building. K2A makes this possible by using solar panels and special solutions when it comes to geothermal heat, demand-controlled ventilation and heat recovery from waste water. Also, the fact that the building is made of wood means significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions in the construction phase than for a traditional steel and concrete building.
