Report this content

South African Tourism is delighted to announce that the organisation is one of the official partners – in addition to South African Airways - celebrating the UK release of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, the eagerly-awaited biopic of Nelson Mandela.

Long Walk to Freedom, which stars Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela, was shot entirely on location in South Africa, with the bulk of filming taking place in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Eastern Cape - Mandela’s home province.

The film’s Royal and European premiere will take centre stage in London next Thursday 5 December, at a star-studded Leicester Square screening – which will be attended by TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The film will go on general release 3 January 2014 – at the beginning of the year when South Africans will be marking 20 years since Mandela became president.

With 2014 fast approaching, next year will be an exciting milestone year for South Africa. As well as the nationwide celebrations around the 20th anniversary of democracy, Cape Town’s cultural scene will be buzzing even more than usual, as the city takes up position as the World Design Capital 2014. If there was ever a time to visit South Africa, next year will certainly be the year to explore the Rainbow Nation.

Thulani Nzima, CEO of South African Tourism, said: ‘On the eve of one of the most exciting years for the country it gives us great pleasure to be celebrating Long Walk to Freedom - a film which ties in so closely with our continuing work to showcase the new South Africa. Not only did this great man change the lives of South Africans, but his work provided the foundations for the kinds of unique cultural experiences that visitors to our country can enjoy today.’

Promotional activity around the film will be carried out in partnership with South African Airways.
