In respond to customers’ needs Kiilto offers adhesives with a food contact material certification
Kiilto is now an authorised provider of adhesives that are intended to come into contact with food.
The application process for EU approval for adhesives used in food packaging is a pilot project made by Mr. Tero Järvenpää as his academic thesis at Kiilto. The initiative for the project came from our customers: they needed adhesives with a certificate of conformity on material’s suitability to be used in contact with foodstuffs.
The pilot project yields EC regulatory compliance and a new model of procedures
Prior to this pilot project, Kiilto already had adhesives approved for food packaging, but EU legislation on food contact materials has been specified quite recently. Moreover, laws and regulations on product safety vary, and there is uncertainty in the interpretation. In his study, Järvenpää systematically compiled a document of current requirements, and based on this data, built a new model of procedures for Kiilto. Consequently, Sitol 4140 and Sitomelt EVO 30 were certified in accordance with EU legislation.
The model of procedures developed by Järvenpää will be utilized by Kiilto as soon as the company extends the range of food safe adhesives to other adhesive types as well. Kiilto has decided to apply for the same certificate of conformity for most Sitol and Sitomelt adhesives and certain Kestokol, Kestopur and KiiltoFlex adhesives.
Certificates indicate safety
Certificates of conformity indicate our customers that the adhesives comply with the requirements for the materials and articles intended to come into direct or indirect contact with food according to the Framework Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, the GMP regulation (EC) No 2023/2006 on good manufacturing practices, the Food Act L 23/2006 as well as the (EU) 10/2011 regulation on plastic materials. The conformity will be marked with a glass-fork-symbol in our product labels and brochures.
Sitol 4140 and Sitomelt EVO 30 are already tested and approved for food packaging applications. We have detailed information on these two adhesives available to our customers, and self-monitoring- and HACCP-systems help in finding the compliance data.
With connection to the project, Kiilto is training its personnel. Several amendments have been made in Kiilto production instructions to guarantee absolute safe adhesives in materials that come into direct or indirect contact with foodstuffs.
