Kirkby Community Cycle Hub
Residents in Kirkby are getting on their bikes and enjoying the benefits of community cycle rides.
The new Southdene Community cycle hub is now open and trained volunteers are leading regular group cycle rides for all ages* and abilities.
The cycle hub is based at Southdene Community Centre with bikes and helmets available to hire for a small charge (suggested donation of £1). Pedal Away, a Big Lottery funded project, has provided bikes, child seats, a handcycle and a tricycle in addition to leadership training for local volunteers.
Cllr Marie Stuart, was involved in setting up the new cycle hub, “Local residents were really keen to have this facility and the response has been fantastic. Kirkby Ranger, Kevin Bushell gave a tremendous amount of support to set this up.”
“We now have trained volunteers and there will be organised rides every week for those who are just getting back on their bikes or who just enjoy cycling with others. Everyone is welcome to enjoy the facilities, regardless of their ability.”
“We also have plans to establish a Southdene Cycling Group.”
Cllr Dave Lonergan, Knowsley’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Economy and Skills said: “This is another fantastic example of how funding from the Local Sustainable Transport Fund is delivering benefits for local residents.”
“It’s fantastic that so many people are using the facilities and getting involved. Not only is this a great way for people to stay active and improve their health but the group is also making use of the new cycling paths and routes around the borough.”
“This project is a further example of how we are investing into and improving Kirkby to give our residents the facilities they deserve.”
Pedal Away community bike rides will run from the centre every Thursday and Sunday mornings and additional rides will be supported by trained volunteers. Residents can call Kirkby Ranger, Kevin Bushell on 07810 054 159 to get involved.
Sustrans will support the volunteers with training and provide additional activities and events for the community.
*All children and young people that are under the age of 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.
